The tiny toddler hopped and skipped
As she darted to and fro
She moved in perpetual motion
There was naught about her slow

She loved the many friends she had
Centerpiece of attention was she
It was a pleasure to just observe
How happy she could be

The ways of the world this little girl
Had much to learn about
But now she appeared for all to see
On the inside looking out

As years rolled by the picture changed
Her line of friends grew thin
Til eventually she found herself
On the outside looking in

As her self esteem diminished
And her life became a rout
She wondered how the world might seem
From the inside looking out

Twas difficult now to find a place
With the tiniest group of friends
So she reconciled her place was still
On the outside looking in

Her marriage, a shambles, was ended
Reason by then had dissolved
In the wrong type of setting she tried making friends
And her problems were still unresolved

Estranged now is she from her family and friends
Nowhere does she feel she belongs
So you try to examine the parts of her past
And wonder whatever went wrong

The milk has been spilt, no time now to cry
There is little that one more can say
Never our love have we withheld from her
We'll continue to hope and to pray

What a joy it would be if that toddler we'd see
So carefree and happy again
And we pray that someday no longer she'll be
On the outside looking in
