John Robert was a frugal man-
could not be called a Fancy Dan.
He saved each dime and every cent,
but in short time, all had been spent.

He always seemed in somber mood,
he seldom fancied restaurant food.
And when he ate there, every time,
the waiter's tip was just a dime.

No one had ever thought that he
could be so downright niggardly.
He grew long hair and scruffy beard,
Like homeless men he then appeared.

But one bleak day John Robert sighed,
Took one deep breath, and then he died.
And deep within his safe was found,
some papers that were ribbon bound.

It was disclosed John once had wealth,
also a child in poorest health.
In hospice home the girl was kept,
and every day for her John wept.

Each cent John owned was spent to keep
this dear sweet girl in dreamless sleep.
The doctor gave the child a hug,
then gently reached to pull the plug.
