Our Freedom Must be Earned

Our freedom is a gift from God
that by all hearts is yearned.
but unlike God's free gift of love,
our freedom must be earned.


The luxury of freedom is
by all humanity sought.
a goal that cannot be assumed,
a truth that God has wrought.


There is a price that will be paid,
for freedom must be bought.
The price is lives that have been lost
in battles our country's fought.


But once we've gained this precious gift,
it must then be maintained.
For there are those who would destroy
the freedoms we have attained.


Continuous dangers all pose overt threats,
but subtler forces begin
a process of values erosion that spring
from sources that hide from within.

In the fight we must wage against evil,
We can't allow efforts to fail
An ongoing struggle must be well maintained
for goodness and peace to prevail
